In 1916, the Chicago Defender published Jacksonville poet Matthew Ward’s poem “Bound for the Promised Land.” The poem encouraged African Americans to leave the racial discriminatory south and move to the north. That year, more than 6,000 African Americans left Jacksonville alone, starting one of the largest movements of people in the United States.
